NATIONAL DENTAL HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAM 2010

"Right from the Start"

The AADA National Dental Health Education program for 2010 was introduced at Conference 2010 in Tempe, AZ. During the DHE session we learned about the "Right from the Start" program from Dr. Ray Wagner, a pediatrician from Tucson, who developed the program in 2006 and uses it in his healthcare centers in El Rio, AZ.  Dr. Wagner shared the information about the alarming rate of early childhood caries (ECC) that is currently at 60% while in comparison childhood obesity 30% and childhood asthma 11%. He stumbled onto this little known fact after seeing how sick a little child can get after having an infected molar tooth. It made such an impact on him that he began his crusade and developed the "Right from the Start" program. For your use are the following materials:

In addition to Dr. Wagner's program, another component of the DHE session at conference was the introduction of and distribution to the alliance members in attendance of the "Improving Women's and Children's Oral Health Flip Chart, courtesy of grant funds from the Foundation for Dental Health Education. This is an educational tool that can be used along with the "Right from the Start" materials. The text is written in both English and Spanish.
