Each year, the Alliance of the American Dental Association (AADA) coordinates a Head 2 Toe Project which supports a local organization in need. The project is held in conjunction with the ADA Annual Meeting, and this year it was supposed to take place in Orlando. Although the ADA Annual Meeting has been canceled the Alliance is supporting a local organization in collaboration with the Central Florida District Dental Association and Dental Society of Greater Orlando. The coordinated support efforts are now through the close of the ADA Virtual Meeting, October 17th. This year, the Harbor House of Central Florida was selected. They are the only state certified domestic violence center serving Orange County. The Mission of the Harbor House strives to prevent and break the cycle of domestic abuse through empowerment, advocacy, education, and community engagement.
Why the Harbor House? October is Domestic Violence awareness month. They do a lot of education all year long, but in October they really bring the community in to help bring awareness.
What is Domestic Violence? Domestic violence is a pattern of controlling behavior that may include physical, sexual, economic, cyber, emotional, and/or psychological abuse by a current or former intimate partner or family member. Domestic violence can happen to anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion, or gender. It happens to couples who are currently or formerly married, living together, or dating. Domestic violence affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels.
